Project Interest: Climate Change, Migration, displacement and relocation is always in the domain of academic research and policy level intervention and often the general public especially women and children are ignored in the process of creating sustainable development to advocate and make the changes that are good for people, planet and prosperity.
In the time of Large-scale human migration due to resource scarcity, increased frequency of extreme weather events, increased frequency and severity of disease outbreaks, are serious challenges and need to be addressed in all levels. Future of the World project is initiated with the idea of involving the general public in creating art and cultural properties which will help to advocate and find sustainable solutions to the long-term consequences of climate change. Action: Human mobility is an age-old phenomenon driven by numerous factors: people move in search of better economic and employment opportunities, due to changing policies at home or abroad, to escape conflict and social persecution, or in combination with natural hazards and environmental degradation affecting their livelihoods. The Human migration, displacement and relocation are induced by the complex interplay between social, political, economic, cultural and environmental factors.
This project is conceived with the idea of creating an arts-based dialogue to encourage and foster global dialogue on issues of climate change-induced migration in South East Asia and to re-imagine a more sustainable world, and provide space for different perspectives on the issues of climate change and migration. |
Impact: The visibility of Hashtag Future is enormous. The project targets all the communities inhabiting en route the journey, using diverse interventions like recording, documenting and detailing the art and cultural practices. We are also committed to engage with the communities in producing multiple-format outcomes right from the book to documentary, an exhibition to a festival and talk shows to the symposium. The aforesaid activities are believed to have a long-term impact on the communities we visit and engage. The project will create values and will engage in appreciating and nurturing their traditions and customs which are built and being practiced over centuries.
Prospect: We would like to create an Open access Creative Knowledge cooperative (CKC) on community understanding of climate change challenges in South East Asia. This CKB will enable the community to preserve the art, cultures and their sustainable livelihood practices. CKB will also be a repository of cross-cultural ecological histories. We would also like to create a platform to use art and culture as tools for creating social impact - awareness programs regarding ecological sustainability across the South East Asia region. We would like to organize workshops for youth to come in contact with new ideas, develop their creativity, experience teamwork with people from diverse cultures, and improve their skills.
Perspective: In South East Asia, increasing temperatures, sea level rise, more frequent cyclones, flooding of river systems fed by melting glaciers, and other extreme weather events are exacerbating current internal and international migration patterns. Additionally, rapid economic growth and urbanization are accelerating and magnifying the impact and drivers of climate change—the demand for energy is expected to grow 66 percent by 2040. Compounding this, many of the expanding urban areas are located in low-lying coastal areas, already threatened by sea level rise. The confluence of these factors leads to predictions that the living conditions of 800 million people could seriously diminish and intensity will prompt mass migration—possibly at an unprecedented level. Future of the world, is committed with the responsibility and to creatively document and artistically outreach to the communities from India and South East-Asia.
